ceremony (and the start of summer)

I guess I'm still not American enough. Why don't they hold graduation in their own auditorium, I wondered. The high school auditorium is pretty huge, but not Big-Ten university basketball stadium huge, which apparently is the size you'd need to accommodate Nu's graduating class and and their families.

(Incidentally, "accommodate" is a word Magic Johnson, once a player at this very stadium, used very inventively. As in: "I did my best to accommodate as many women as I could." They have his name up there and it reminded me.)

Anyway, it was a full day--breakfast with one set of grandparents, lunch with another, then off to pick up people for the ceremony, and back at our place for dinner... Nu is currently away celebrating with friends.

I can't wait to get into my summer routine. Tomorrow we have an all-day department workshop. So perhaps I can start from this weekend, which conveniently happens to be the beginning of June? Yay!

Pic: Watching as the students throw their caps into the air. How much hope for the future is gathered in this one place! I clapped for each and every graduate and am so happy and hopeful for all of them.  I wish admin could have found a way to spend a moment to honor the senior student who died last year

My sons had their graduations at the university auditorium, because there were so many people! I loved it.
I know this is NOT the point but now I can't stop laughing at Magic Johnson. ACCOMMODATE. I mean. I'm laughing all over again. Thank you for your service, sir. For making so many accommodations.

Congrats again to Nu. Knowing of the struggles they had getting here, I'm sure it means a lot to you. I know it did to me when North graduated.

Noah's h.s. graduation was in a university stadium, too (University of Maryland). North's was in a smaller venue (it's a smaller school), but still bigger than the school auditorium.

Congratulations to Nu! Yes, I wish graduations were held at more pleasant venues. Our high school graduations are held at an exhibition hall at the South County Fairgrounds, and my son's college graduation was held in the basketball stadium. Well, I guess they have to ACCOMMODATE a ton of people.
Sounds like the whole day (and Nu's party) was really nice!

Our high school graduations were held in the evenings at the football stadium. If there was rain, it was postponed to the following night. Both of my sons had a senior class of over 350 students.

I remember well the giddy feeling of June, the start of Summer Freedom, easing into Summer Routine. So happy for you!

Wow, that stadium is very full! I grew up in a tiny rural town and had a graduating class of 28 so they held our ceremony in the gymnasium which had ample space. It will be a totally different experience when my kid graduate!

That's nothing new. You probably didn't live here when they had the old Civic Center downtown (now a massive parking lot on Allegan) but that's where we had ours. We had about 800 kids in our class if I remember right and our auditorium was good sized but not good enough for two parents each! I love that June 1 will start your new renewal/routine cycle. Timing is everything!

Nicole, I heard that tidbit decades ago, and it has never left my head!

Steph, Thank you. This was not at all something I took for granted or expected... It truly is a celebration in our family.

The fairgrounds sound quite festive, Jenny. I'm seeing flowering trees in my head. This stadium was quite nice too, I was just surprised at how many people needed to be there.

It's a sign of a vibrant and growing community, so I'm all for large graduating classes!

Nance, I love teaching, but the "three best reasons for teaching" quip (June, July, & August) always makes me chuckle.

Thank you!

That is a tiny and intimate class. But now I'm imagining a world fifteen years into the future :)! How wonderful!

Jeanie, There's so much I have to learn! I think graduating classes are trending smaller now?

next week will be better

I saw a thing somewhere that said adult life is about telling yourself that next week will get easier and you'll get to relax until it...
