Ughs <--> Ohs

The NWSA proposal EM and I submitted together didn't get accepted, but the one I submitted by myself did. I wanted to go with her!

I ran out of moisturizer while traveling with the kids and sampled Nu's Vanicream, and it's a dream. It may be the one thing Miranda July got right in All Fours. (That and the bit about dogs.)

I got my travel course evals--high marks, but very few comments. It would have been nice if some of the kind things people wrote in cards and emails were in the course evals--I'm up for assessment the year after next.

I got a copy of American Dirt by Jeanine Cummings (from a Goodwill) because a student (Hi, CW!) wanted to work on it and am reading it now. I expected to hate every minute of its appropriative voice... but have to say it's quite respectful and suspenseful.

A poetry anthology I have some poems in is now on Amazon and getting promoted heavily by the editors... and I'm worried my mom might see. I know she'll not like that I wrote about some of those topics.

Pic: I watched this frog swim up to the little solar fountain like they were a kid in summer camp swimming up to the buoy in the middle of the lake. Their name is Popchyk. (Big A is reading The Goldfinch on my recommendation and we talk about the puppy more than any other character.)

So much to comment on!
Congrats on being accepted, but too bad it wasn't with your friend. Boo, but also yay?
I really liked All Fours, although it was weird as hell. Sometimes I still laugh at the image of her in gigantic panties with a shirt tucked into it, thinking "this is a new outfit he hasn't seen before."
I agree with you about American Dirt! I read it before I heard about any controversy, and then I thought that the people who (very validly!) brought up the criticisms actually maybe hadn't read the book. I thought it was extremely respectful and well-done and brought a perspective that I didn't have before.
I would LOVE to read that poetry anthology, could you send the title to me privately?
Can I admit something? I HATED The Goldfinch!

I also would like the title to your poetry anthology! I will keep it on my bookshelf next to Nicole’s book when we get that one!

LOL about All Fours. Is the vanacream for body, face, or both?

I remember liking The Goldfinch when I read it a million years ago, but I don’t remember a puppy. Now maybe I need to re-read it.

It’s so funny how you mentioned the book because I’m revisiting the idea/seeing if it’s possible for my MFA thesis! Reading right along with you.

Now I'm laughing too... NJ is adorably weird.
(I'll send the link to you... they keep posting it on my FB page as well--which is where I'm afraid my mom will see it.)
Aw! Sorry you didn't like _The Goldfinch_. I knew A would like it, because it's got that old New York, Jewish, artsy vibe that would make him nostalgic for his grandparents.

Sigh. Kids rarely enjoy filling out course evals unless they have an axe to grind.

Great news about your poems in the anthology. This is where we're very different; I love shocking my mother, even to this day.

OMG, J! You are so kind! It's available through Amazon--and I'm having a crisis about ordering copies. I'll send you a link.

Nu has all the Vanicreams, and I think I'm going to switch as I empty out my current ones. They're all fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and < $20.

Popchyk is his father's gf's puppy in Vegas... (being vague in case you read it again)

Claire! I'd LOVE to talk about it when you finish (I just did)>

Nance-hahaha! I'm going to see if I can adopt that spirit. (Nah-my mom would get mad and that would just make it uncomfortable for everyone.)

Lots of ughs and ohs here- funny how one thing can be both. But overall lots of good! I wish you had gotten amazing comments in your course eval, but I agree with Nance- people usually don't take the time to comment unless it's something negative.
You're in a poetry anthology! Being sold on Amazon! I can see how that would give you mixed feelings. Hopefully your mom won't discover it.

I wanted to like the Goldfinch. When you spend that much time on a book, you really want to like it. But it was just too long. I think if they knocked out about 200 pages, it still would have been long but much tighter and (for me, at least) more captivating. I say this knowing full well everyone else loved it!) I wish you had the comments too but at least they were good evals (how could they not be?) and that says something. (Bring those cards with you to your reassessment in a year or two!)

That's so true. I'm going to make a point of sharing compliments whenever possible now, Jenny.

Oh, I liked _The Goldfinch_, but would have no trouble agreeing that it did go on and on!! (Thanks for the idea of bringing the cards to assessment, Jeanie!)
