some noes

I would have been miserable as a lawyer. I had to do lawyer-like things today in my role as a CASA and also in my role as a Title IX advisor on campus, and while they were necessary things, I felt quite unhappy doing them. It reminded me a bit of what our realtor JS said. He used to be a cop and said he liked being a realtor because when he was a cop, 90% of his interactions with people were negative and as a realtor, it was the inverse.

I had a good time at the thrift store (I found some great copies of some fairly recent books) but somehow managed to forget the one thing I actually went in there for... an old lampshade I plan to use as a collar for our Christmas tree.

Speaking of which, no--our tree isn't up. I took Thanksgiving down just this past weekend, and I like a little palate cleanser... all the better to savor Christmas decorations. (Also, the kids won't be here until mid December, which is when the tree will come up from the basement. Hallelujah.)

Pic: I kind of did decorate for Thanksgiving! (And didn't do *anything* for Halloween.)

Your Thanksgiving decorations are lovely! I like the idea of a palate cleanser, and it makes perfect sense to wait for the kids to decorate. If you change your mind and want to put out a few extra candles or twinkle lights, you can, and if you don’t, you don’t. We have a wreath on our door and our (minimal) outside lights up, nothing else yet.

We haven't decorated yet either. I think it's going to be a challenge this year, with the cats, so I am putting it off.

Nice T-giving decorations. We go all out for Halloween and decorate moderately for Christmas, but nothing for Thanksgiving except one year when North was little and they made a banner with painted turkeys and the words "Let's Say Happy" to hang on the front porch.

It's sometimes soul-crushing to have to do the hard work of advocacy and representation. It's like being a gladiator. No one enjoys the fight, but when we flag and falter, we remember who we're fighting for. Thank goodness they have us to do this. Thank you for taking on these tiresome and tedious and burdensome battles, my friend. They matter and are so important.

I find that I'm more than ready for my Christmas tree to be up. I want that light and that beauty in the corner of my living room. And it also provides a wonderful place for Piper, my orange cat, to relax and rest.

I'm intrigued by your lampshade idea! How creative!

I love your Thanksgiving decorations!! They are so charming and fun! I do not decorate for Halloween/Thanksgiving aside from some purple spider lights for our mantle and these cute little chicks with plaid outfits. But I decorated for Christmas in mid-November. I used to wait until after Thanksgiving but I need the glow of our tree ASAP!!

We are opposites! I don't decorate for Thanksgiving, but we have almost as many Halloween decorations as we do Christmas.

Your Thanksgiving display makes me think maybe I should do something for Thanksgiving, though. It's so fun!

Your Thanksgiving decorations are so fun! I always wish I had more fall decor -- I got all out for Halloween, and then November feels so bland.

One of my favourite (okay, I know we aren't supposed to have favourites BUT) yoga students was a man who had just retired from the police force. He signed up for senior's yoga on the advice of his counsellor who he had to see after thirty years on the force. The counsellor advised him to "try something like yoga or meditation" because he was VERY negative and had high blood pressure from, well, the job. Anyway! He ended up being my most-regular student in that class, and he was kind of cynical to start with but then after a while he'd be early to class and would be chatting happily with all the other seniors. It was great. I can see him now, in the same blue jogging suit week after week. I think he had that jogging suit in the 80s. Ah, good memories.

I love your front stoop. I don't do anything outside for Thanksgiving apart from leftover pumpkins but I love seeing it. It will be fun to have your brood home for the holidays! I really admire the work you do. I know it must be emotionally hard.

You are so gentle, J. I do think outdoor things may go up sooner than inside things...

Oh, are the Ws naughtier this year?!

I LOVE "Let's Say Happy" And I love the turkey figures your family crafts. And it makes sense that you don't decorate for T-giving as you travel.

Now that you've said it, Nance--I can see myself being cozy in Christmas tree light...

And I hope that lampshade project turns out ok--I hope someone will let me know if it looks ridic.

Lisa! It's nothing like your neighbor's Geese... but I've been collecting those chicks for a few years--they have them for every season, and it's a lot of fun to rotate them out. Can you see my chicks perched on the edge of the planter? Purple spider lights sound so fun... and immediately made me think of Prince (MPLS)

Also thank you for the first part of your comment... I got a bit shy and self conscious and then forgot my manners!

I bet Halloween is more (scary) fun! We have two October birthdays + Diwali and sometimes Navratri, so putting up ominous figures feels a bit inauspicious. (Plus I did not have the energy.)

Thanks, Suzanne. All of this fits into one tub. I have at least twice as many Halloween decorations, but haven't gotten around to them for a few years!

I'm glad he found your class, Nicole.

Jogging suit from the 80s! Proof that fashion comes around... they're having quite the moment now. Even those velour suits with "juicy" splashed across the butt.

Jeanie, sadly, not a single real pumpkin was harmed in the process! A should have taught our kids American ways and how to carve jack o' lanterns.
