I'm glad we didn't cancel.
I thought the room he'd booked for us at Wadham--the Cecil Day Lewis Room--was a lucky coincidence. But as he told my students, he booked it precisely because back when I was there, that was where we had our seminars. (Cecil Day Lewis the poet is the father of Daniel Day Lewis the actor!)
I had to tell my students the funny story about when I took At to one of Robert's parties in NYC (after he'd moved to NYU). Hoping for good behavior, I'd told five-year-old At who came with me that it was for work (as it was!). There were a lot of British and European folks at the party, so there were a lot of those greetings where you hug and then kiss on both cheeks. Lo and behold, later that week when going through At's schoolwork, I came across this gem: "My mom went to work and kissed everybody." I always wonder what At's teacher thought of that.

Imagine what preschool teachers hear on the regular. My friend's daughter used to say that when she went to bed, Mommy and Daddy watched sex. She was talking about Sex and the City.

That is funny. How cool about the room, too. When we were moving North out of their room a few days ago, I still found it strange to be in there as it was my boyfriend's room my sophomore year and I slept there more nights than not-- it's a single. (I've kind of glossed over that with North-- I told them it was a friend's room.)

Love the At story! Teachers hear the most random snippets! I worked with a woman who was a flight attendant previously. She worked late night flights so she would leave for work and leave her daughter with her parents. Her daughter told her teacher: ‘my mom works at night. When she leaves for work, she puts on shiny stockings and bright red lipstick.’ I died hearing that story! She set the teacher straight about what she really did for work.
