easy hero

Sarah was so right about that feeling when you can "swoop in" and set things right for your older kids who are usually so independent, but are also... kids.

I stopped at the Genius Bar after work to get Nu's phone fixed. It would take them 90 minutes. I didn't have to make dinner (it's Nu's Boss Day and they were ordering Pokè), so I walked around the "lifestyle mall." Maybe I'm at a point where I really do have all I need, because I wasn't even tempted to buy anything. (Hero!) I'm sure I have a version of everything in the quarter century of colorful, curated stuff in my overstuffed closet. (Hero!)

Nicole and Lisa talked about laughing while listening to their podcasts on walks and wondered if people thought they were silly. I have the opposite problem--it was so cold, my eyes were streaming as I walked and people in cars kept giving me concerned looks or averted their eyes and twice stopped to ask if I was ok. (Heroes don't cry!)

Anyway, the Genius Bar charged me 0.00, Nu's phone was fixed, I picked up some tiramisu to be extra, and came home to a hero's welcome.

Pic: While I was waiting, it occurred to me that Nu's phone is attired in characteristic Nu fashion: ink-dark for the most part, but with plenty of sparkle, and a laconic sense of humor.

HERO MODE ACTIVATED!
It's so great to be able to FIX something, you know. I feel like celebrating for you!
I'm so excited because I just downloaded a new episode of Absolutely Not so I will probably be laughing on the walk today. It's chilly though, not a lot of walkers out and about to witness my knee-slapping hysteria.

I'm glad you got to be the hero.

I wonder what my phone says about me. The case is plain gray and only adorned with two small red and white stickers that say OC (Oberlin College, not Ocean City as I'm sure many people around here assume, since it's often called OC).

Nice.

Yes, I can imagine the hero's welcome you received- getting that phone fixed was probably the best thing you've done in a long time (in Nu's eyes.)
I'm actually laughing at the thought of people stopping to ask if you're okay. I've had that same issue- not quite to that extent- when running in the cold. Why are there tears running down my face???

Fixed phone and delicious tiramisu! You're my hero, too.

I feel that way when I go to malls, too. Like...I don't want anything there, except for maybe the perfect foundation from Sephora? How did we get to this place?

I am officially an old. You're just very eco-conscious.

OMG, Jenny! How do you know Nu so well (wait, don't tell me, I know. Laugh-sob).

I can't bear to see them cry... and you gave me that extra push.

Every time you say "knee-slapping," I snortle. I can PICTURE you doing it!

Thanks!

When we were in lockdown for Covid, Eve desperately wanted a Nintendo Switch Lite to play Animal Crossing with her friends. We couldn't find one to order, but then I went to Shoppers Drug Mart and they had two. I texted her a picture and she texted back "omg, we can say you risked your LITERAL LIFE to get this for me". it is so good to be the hero. What is Nu's Boss Day?

I don't believe I've ever had a win this easy... ha

Aw, sweet, sweet Eve!!

Boss Day is my favorite invention! I made it up when the kids were little...
"we celebrate everyone's "birthday" every month. My birthday is on March 4th, so it's my Boss Day on the 4th of every month--At is on the 2nd, Nu the 11th, Scout and Huck the 18th, Big A the 23rd, and so on. I get the "Boss Baby" a small present (usually a book and some treats) and they get to pick dinner (home/restaurant) and a family activity (show/game). It makes for a nice mini celebration every week." https://www.pocobrat.net/2022/02/boss-day.html

Not just a Hero--A SUPERHERO!

SO PROUD TO KNOW YOU.

I do think it's a Certain Age Thing to recognize that so much stuff out there is just that--Stuff. I like a more streamlined life now: I don't want more stuff to dust, launder, or just plain Deal With.

Love the idea of Boss Day as long as it doesn't get too worky.

Hooray for being the hero! I bet the tiramisu was really a hit with the family! That’s amazing that it cost nothing to have the phone repaired!

I felt similarly the times I’ve been in a mall recently. Similarly, people often comment about Instagram ads prompting them to buy something. Back when I still was on Instagram, I honestly never noticed an ad!! Surely they must’ve been in my feed, but I guess I just glossed over them or something.

Re. phone--I think we're under a giant family warranty, Lisa.

The IG ads are supposedly more like product placement, but I love that you breezed right past them! My teen was very into skincare products based on TikTok for a while, and I have to say their recommendations were excellent. I still use the brand (Cosrx).

Omigosh, Nance! I want so much to take this commendation, especially from you... But I must confess that I'm not at all a minimalist. I *already* have SO MUCH stuff.
I guess I'll have achieved the true next stage when I start giving it away.
