they say every poem is a ghost story
keeping its secrets, still looking on in
what I remember is opening the door
knowing this made surprise and sense
the curious ritual of intuition and touch--
feeling one's way as though blindfolded
seeing everything entire as a visionary
I stay the same; I've never felt this way

I told Engie we don't do advent calendars. And that was true, but this is Nu's last year at home and I thought I should at least try it? Big A and Nu like jam, so I got the (what I like to think of as the anti-Nazi jam) Bonne Maman calendar, and... they rarely barely remember to open it. I keep reminding them though, because I love those darling little jars when they're empty. And oh, what a sweet Bonne Maman advent calendar proposal story!

Those Bonne Maman calendars are adorable! I have a puzzle calendar, every day a little puzzle that features dogs in Santa hats!
That proposal story was precious.

WOW--these lines are tremendous. It makes me wish I was still teaching, just so I could talk about the metaphor in these lines. Incredible.
Beautiful poem. And beautiful photo of the tree! And... I keep forgetting to open my advent calendar doors as well. I'm glad I didn't do a puzzle one like Nicole, because I would be hopelessly behind and feel a lot of pressure to get caught up.
Your tree is beautiful! And that jam proposal story was such a delight! We have a little advent calendar with drawers. Some years they've gotten little wrapped presents on random days, several years they got a wrapped Christmas/winter-themed book on some days. This year they are just getting 4 m&ms each and seem to be fine with this. I couldn't handle bringing anymore clutter into our life and we have so many holiday books now so I didn't want to add to the collection.
If you don't do an advent calendar, don't force it!! I do love those little jam jars, though. SO CUTE. And useful.
That is SO cute! I'd love to see pictures!
Thank you, Nance. This means a lot to me.
Thank you, Jenny.
Yes, I can see how the puzzle would be stressful. I think we may be giving away the tiny jams like you said your friend did... But I want the emptied jars!
Thank you, Lisa. If I were to do it over again, I think I'd pick what you're describing--with the option to make/fill with customized treats. It seems more sustainable too.
Four M&Ms :)! Aw! It's not the thing itself, it's the sprit of the thing! My MIL would sometimes give the puppies their dry kibble piece by piece from the table, and they'd go bonkers for it as though they were getting special treats!
Engie, I was so influenced by your post, you influencer, you! But at least now I can say I've tried it and it was not for us :)
One year North made Advent calendars for the whole family. It might have been 2020 when we all had some extra time on our hands. Anyway each one was a garland with tiny bags of chocolate attached to it. We strung them across the windows.
It was 2020. This post has a picture. https://allfortheloveofyou.com/making-christmas/
How lovely of North, StephLove... They are so creative and they always seem to enjoy giving.
That would have been the year everyone could have used some extra cheer too.
