someday...

I've loved the beach since I was a kid. The beach (especially if I'm there with people I love) is always my happy place.

That's something Big A knows. For instance, when we had to queue up an hour early for good seats on the cruise on Saturday, he remarked that I didn't seem to mind because I just watched the waves the whole time. No phone or book, he marveled.

So as we drove over the Mackinaw Bridge, Big A was daydreaming about getting a cabin on the lake someday so I could watch the waves all day. It would have to be a tiny plot and all we'd put in would be one great room with a screened-in porch. I realized the screened-in porch would be for A who doesn't enjoy the beach and sun as much as I do--so basically, a way for him to be with me as I do something I love.

Love is a true blessing.

Pic: Beautiful Lake Superior from the car window as we left the Upper Peninsula yesterday. I still yearn for the ocean some days, but the Great Lakes and the "third coast" have really grown on me.

What a pretty picture.
I'm not a beachy person at all, but I like being near the water just to watch it and hear it. I find it restful and restorative. We have a house on a small private lake and the moment we drive up to it, I feel my whole body relax. Same with being on the boat.

I'm so glad you both had such a good time. It sounds like a place you could revisit.

Oberlin is near Lake Erie, and back in the 80s when we were in school there was a tourism campaign to call the Great Lakes "the North Coast." I see it's been replaced with "Third Coast." I do like lake beaches and bay beaches but they don't have the same visceral pull as ocean beaches for me. I lived the first two and half years of my life in Los Angeles and my mom took me to the beach every day. I have no conscious memory of this, but I think it carved a groove in me.

p.s. That cabin with porch idea sounds ideal.

Well, I live right near the ocean and I can tell you I would choose your trip over an ocean vacation. You had rocks, and hikes and waterfalls, AND the beach! I can sit and look at the waves here, but then there's nothing else to do- just miles and miles of sand and water. Your trip sounds amazing.

Sarah--Thanks!

Nance--You're doing retirement right! Your lake house and boat experiences sound wonderful!

Steph--Oooh! Thanks for that tidbit about the "North Coast" I like it better than "Third Coast," which seems a bit derivative. Love the story about your early beach visits--I have a similar experience.

Gillian--Thanks!

Jenny--Noted! Also, it was warm, but not crazy hot.
(But sometimes, I do need a hot, baking beach and salt air!)
