Five on a Friday

1) Worked on finishing yesterday's leftovers and bought absolutely nothing today as usual.

2) (I don't judge people who Black Friday since learning, that for many families, it's a chance to buy things that may otherwise be outside the budget. Also, I think my fam's at a different place as we've reached a stage where neither kids nor grownups need a lot. Yes, I may previously have been judge-y about going straight from being thankful to buying more crap the very next day.)

3) Exactly one month to Christmas now and I think I have a good idea of what everyone is getting. I may add a bookmark or sticker here and there, but for the most part I think it's handled.

4) I was invited to a conference in Alexandria (Egypt!!) and I think I'm going? It's in March so there's plenty of time for things to get canceled/for me to flake out and change my mind. But I've always wanted to see the pyramids, so I've said a tentative yes.

5) Pic: Lots of early morning walks with Big A now that he's here. Yay!

I was going to start Christmas shopping this weekend, but covid changed our plans. All I have bought is a few books for Noah I pre-ordered before North got sick. I dashed into the bookstore double-masked to pick them up.

(I'm testing negative, but trying to act as if contagious because I feel a little sick.)

Until the last maybe 10-15 years, Black Friday wasn't at all a thing in Canada. I mean, we don't have a November Thanksgiving, so it was all new to me. We'd see footage from the States of people being trampled to get a TV and I always thought it was strange. Now, though, I really understand. It might be the only chance for people to buy something that they have always wanted, because otherwise the cost is prohibitive. I myself sometimes indulge in Black Friday shopping now, because the deals are really great. A couple of years ago I bought some kitchen items for our vacation house and the total was something like $400, but if they weren't on Black Friday sale it would have been $1500. And my mom was shopping for her Adopt-A-Family that they are sponsoring through church, and she was able to get every single item on the list under budget, because of those deals. So I really do get that. Also, Thanksgiving here is really not what it is in the States.

I was in Egypt in 2000 and it was such a great trip. It is such an incredible country, I hope you get to go!

StephLove, I am so sorry you're not feeling well. I hope it's not Covid, and that you're feeling better already. There are so many more weekends before Christmas arrives--I hope you're not too anxious about finishing up shopping.

Nicole, thanks for sharing those Black Friday experiences. We've always bought big ticket items under duress (something broke and needs fixing right away) but of course it would make sense if not buying on an emergency basis. And your mom's experience also makes SO MUCH sense. In fact, I went and looked if the adopt-a-family events I signed up for had lists yet, but they don't! I plan to suggest that the lists go up early next time.

And LOL on people in Canada watching Black Friday footage from the States like watching a sport or something!
