I feel like I will always be looking for you don't know where to look for you but I know every word to your favorite song I look at my body with some hesitation but your favorite cake is now mine at least these things will live happily ever after it's an odd game, the going-- to be here in the brain's chorus and words and so gone from the world

Pic: I haven't been to UU on Sundays since Scout (because sitting in silence makes me think of him and I prefer not to cry in public). But RDC, where I've been volunteering this summer, meets in the UU building. It was a "blast from the past" (as the family chat termed it) to see all our badges still sitting up there on the carousel.

That's a beautiful poem, Maya. xo
The line about cake struck me because when I am missing my dad, I often like to eat his favorite foods, especially chocolate ice cream.
This poem...wow. I am always startled by your metaphors; they are so incredibly apt.
"it's an odd game...world": these lines are haunting and so absolutely true.
Take care.
Such a stunning poem, Maya! Thinking of you and sending you hugs!
Thank you for this poem, Maya. I love the idea of appropriating the favorites of those you've lost, relatable and beautiful and heartbreaking. The line "to be here in the brain's chorus" makes me think of earworms, and how those play on a loop in my head, which feels startling and recognizable when I view "earworm" as "memory of someone I loved."
I also really enjoyed how the line break between "going--" and "to be here" allowed the double meaning of "going to be here" as in "EXPECTED be here" or "SHOULD to be here."
Sending you love.
I became very attached to the color orange after my father died, it was his favorite color. I ate my mom’s favorite cake (angel food) for years on her birthday. I did this year too, and it was…OK. I think I need better angel food cake. I have rules around WORDLE that connect me to my dog. I make my blog posts go live at 4:23, because my mom’s birthday was April 23. I did none of these things when they were alive, but they help me feel connected and like they are close.
This is a lovely poem, and I love the picture of your name tags in there. The UU is ready if you ever want to go back, clearly.
I love that your tags are still there. What a lovely place to hold a place for all of you.
Thanks, Love xoxo
I've come across that in many families and traditions too <3
Thank you, Nance. I'm so grateful for your attentive and caring reading <3
Thank you!
Thank you, Lisa. Hugs back!
Thank *you*, Suzanne! Love your reading of the line break.
I love all your rituals and traditions, J. (And look how "Puppy" paid off :). You keep your mom and dad's memory alive in this world. I feel like I know so many details about them as humans to respect and love and all the ways in which you live their best qualities forward <3
Shakespeare is so lucky to share a birthday with your mom! And yes, it did feel like gentle pat on the back to see those name badges.
They haven't given up on me :). Although, realistically speaking, I don't think the kids are going with me anymore...
This poem touches me so very deeply. It really strikes such a deep chord.
<3 Thanks, Jeanie
