Happy New Year!!

Yes, really! I said what I said.

It's Tamil New Year and Asian solar new year through much of the planet today. I am grateful for this reset, I am thankful for the pause. I heard from people I haven't heard in a while, I celebrated with family and friends, I made an Indian feast, I had a pooja.

Democracy is breaking down in the White House and various other things are breaking down in my house, but I'm reassured by Harvard University's resolve not to "surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights" and even more heartened by the 80-something way less affluent colleges and universities that signed an amicus brief opposed to threats against people for lawful speech. Among these, I was charmed to see good old Antioch in Yellow Springs (always on the right side of history!) and other places I've adjuncted including The University of Dayton and Michigan State University.

Pic: I stopped at Lake Lansing Park for a short walk and a few minutes of meditation in the midst of the lapping water on this beautiful day.

I saw the news on Harvard yesterday and thought "a lot of really wealthy people went to Harvard, I wonder if this administration just made a lot of enemies of the people he wants as his backers."
I didn't realize it was Tamil New Year! Happy New Year!

Oh really? Well, Happy New Year! This post feels very hopeful (in the face of so much hopelessness) so thank you!

Happy New Year!

Antioch is our own little UCBerkeley.

I see Phil's Alma Mater (Gustavus Adolphus) on the list. I will have to tell his mom who is also a passionate alumna. She'll be thrilled.

What did you make for your Indian feast? Last night I made what is probably a bastardized Chicken Tikka Masala with cauliflower and chickpeas. Any truly good Indian dish takes hours to make it seems (in my very inexperienced opinion) but this recipe is good for a quickish weeknight meal (that of course only Phil and I eat - zero chance of getting my boys to eat it unfort).

Happy new year!

Beth and I were just talking about universities and colleges (and some K-12 schools) that are not backing down at the breakfast table. I hope it is a new beginning.

Yay for Harvard, and for those who joined the suit. It gets worse and worse.

Now I have that Doja Cat song in my head, which is fine by me, I like it.

There is so much bad news these days, thank you for the good news! Happy New Year!

I just went on a rabbit trail of learning about Antioch College; what an impressively principled institution. I like their motto—“
Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”

Antioch <3
So many buildings seemed abandoned on our last YS trip and they're down to a tiny student population, but their vision and spirit continue to be tremendous.

Lots of small liberal arts schools--Yay for Phil and your MIL!

I made lemon dal, okra masala, chicken curry, and a kadhi-style raita. Your chicken tikka masala sounds delish. I tend to load up recipes with extra veggies and protein too. :)

Thanks, Steph! I really, really hope so. I hope it's the first wave, and that other schools (including mine) sign on soon.

It might just be something in the air today, but I'm feeling hopeful...

The Doja Cat song is Paint the Town Red, and it pops into my head every time I hear someone say, “I said what I said”
