so very sari

I've been meaning to wear more saris to work, but it is almost always too cold during the teaching year in Michigan. But today was Honors Day, and I wanted to honor all the hard work by students by dressing up for their presentations + had to judge a set of awards + attend a child advocacy event + head to the fancy awards dinner later. (AND IT'S ALSO MY BOSS DAY!)

So a sari it was.

Five yards of chiffon held together by some optimistic pleating-tucking into a petticoat, two safety pins, and prayers. It all held together great, but I did have to wake Big A up to button the back of my blouse for me. I have no idea how anyone could do that without help.

Pic: My sweet colleague CP took a full-length pic of me in my office, crouching on the floor to "make me look taller." 💗 The sari and blouse came from my sweet aunt when we were in Bangalore last year. I may or may not have posted this on the secret Skirtathon page Sarah mentioned.

My mouth dropped open, you are SO gorgeous. Wow wow wow! Those colours are absolutely fabulous on you too. I have heard that saris are complicated to put on! You look so stunning, I cannot even, Maya. Oooh la la!

Very pretty, the sari and the woman in it and the office behind her.

Were you chilly, though, with that bare arm? We're in Ohio right now, only one state over and it's cold here!

Absolutely lovely. The colours are perfect for you.

I've always been in awe of how saris look so effortless, yet I know they are marvels of fabric engineering to accomplish.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, friends!!
I love bright colors these days, Nicole. I was more restrained in my youth.
Steph--it was SO cold. I wore my winter jacket whenever I left the room.
Nance--I try not to think of the precarity of the whole thing, but also women in India wear it every day to all kinds of work from construction to desk jobs, so I take some courage from that.

What a lovely garment - the color suits you so well!

My husband recently had a benign cyst removed on his back. It was causing him great annoyance whenever he put weight on his back (which, it turns out, is a surprising amount of time if you think about it - sitting in a chair, driving, sleeping) and now he has stitches! And he has to have he bandage changed once a day. How would he be able to do that without me? I have no idea, but thank goodness he has a lovely partner who is pretending not to be squeamish about it at all. Humans are not meant to be solo creatures.
