2) JN took me to a drag show on Wednesday (I blew off grief group to go), and I met my first Drag King, Prince Marsallis. I love Prince, so the name in itself was a delight.
3) FYI, If I was out in public and you yelled out “pedophile protector” I would not think you were talking to me because I’m not a pedophile protector. I've decided that I'm going to use this to introduce interpellation in the Critical Theory class.
4) Aw! Someone tipped me off that on a new webpage titled "Best Decision Ever" that asks students why they love the college, a student had named me, saying, "I’ve never met someone so passionate and caring for students."(I love my students and I'm glad they can tell.)
Pic: From the Jim Daniels reading last week. He's an alum of the college, taught here (before my time), gave the commencement speech at At's graduation, and teaches in the MFA program, but yesterday was the first time I was actually introduced to him. He then proceeded to talk my ear off (I didn't mind at all).

I am glad you had some glimmers during this rough period of time. And I am not surprised about that students comment about you! You exude warmth and care for others! It is a special characteristic that only a handful of people I know have! I personally do not have that characteristic… I am kind of no nonsense and direct. I guess you can tell that my lineage is German! Ha. But I am a caring person, I just have a bit of a protective shell of sorts.
This is good you were out there -- the group reading so inspiring, the drag show fun and a break from the action. We have to grab those wherever we can get them because they are few and far between. You comment on "pedophile protector" was spot on. Why would you even think it was directed at you if you weren't! Every day worse and worse so I'm trying to cherish moments with friends or any good thing I can find these days. (And three cheers -- that student nailed you perfectly, I bet!)
Interpellation is one of those critical theory terms that just like CLICKED for e in grad school and made so many thing make so much more sense.
I'm glad you are finding the good out there.
These are all such good, hopeful things, Maya. Also I have never met a drag king!
What a great point about interpellation. I also found his reaction to be damning. He's so lacking in self-awareness (and so many other qualities).
What engaging and fun things you found to do. I'm glad you were out and about enjoying yourself. Going to a drag show is still on my wish list.
Your drag show reminds me of when I was a kid, 5th grade, my mom’s boss took us to a fancy dinner (sorbet as palate cleanser type of fancy!) and then to see Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, which is all men. I didn’t get the joke (needed glasses, couldn’t tell they were playing for laughs) and wondered why people were laughing at the dancers, who were doing such an amazing job.
Your brightness brightens the world for others. ☀️

Congrats to you.
Lisa, I"ve always received and felt care from you! IDK if you remember, but I'll never forget when there was a plane crash last year, and you reached out to me because my mom and sis were going to travel that month and it was flight they could have been on!
Jeanie, Yes... trying to get out more. Building community is important work too!
I have so much nostalgia for grad school... More than for the undergraduate years, even.
Thanks, Steph. These are tough times for sure.
Now you have their Insta, Nicole :)!
They're a fairly regular thing here because Michigan is a sanctuary state, Nance. I will happily take you to one!
J, I was so struck by how well you remember that evening from 5th grade! And what a fancy dinner... I've been watching YouTube videos of fancy restaurants in NYC and am now craving a fancy evening...
Did you not know you needed glasses? We did not know with Nu... When we finally got them glasses and they could see "trees have leaves," I felt so terrible.
Thank you! As does yours, darling Steph! 💗
Thank you!
I knew I needed glasses, but I was vain and refused to wear them. My Maya also needed glasses and we didn’t know either. I think when kids are growing, their vision can change pretty quickly, because I am sure her doctor checked her vision at checkups. I mean, I HOPE so!
Maya! That student accolade is so wonderful. My professor who also taught my daughter was the same, and it is a life-changing, long-enduring thing. Your work is so important.
Yes I remember that! I was so worried even though I knew the chances they were on that flight were so low. I am caring, but I don’t exude it like you do! It seems to come out of your pores!!
This is making me smile... My 5th grade friend not wearing glasses out of vanity. I had so many strange habits I thought were "cool" that I cringe at now...
That thing with kids' eyesight is a headscratcher... it took me so long to forgive myself.
Allison, this means so much coming from you--as I know you keep in touch with your profs <3 Thank you!
"Pores" LOL
