I wasn't sure what I was going to do about the holidays... I didn't celebrate Diwali this year--it was too soon after Amma's funeral.
But Christmas wasn't a holiday I typically celebrated with her, so I thought I'd be ok. But no, it has been brutal. After I came back from NYC, I don't really know what happened between Monday and Friday?
And now Christmas is less than a week away. Or a few days away.
I didn't feel putting together a family holiday card this year, but last week I realized that this was the last year my mom could be on one (grandparents and sibs are usually on our holiday cards) so I had to make one. And mom loved our dress-up shenanigans, so I ordered us some tinsel wigs.
Pic: The best we could do. Max was very offended by the idea of wearing a wig. And did A (behind me) not know his face was completely obscured? We were already late for trivia night and friends were waiting, so there were no retakes.

I love the dogs’ ‘what is even happening here’ vibe. I am glad you still did cards. Christmas snuck up on all of us, but especially for you, I bet. With thanksgiving being so late, it came especially quickly this year. I got all our presents wrapped but it doesn’t seem like Christmas should be this coming week!
I’m glad you put together a card, so cute! I know you didn’t feel like Christmas was going to be rough because you didn’t celebrate with your mom, but there’s something about finding joy when you’re in mourning that is HARD. Sigh. Good job pulling it out where you can.
I love the card. It looks like it was loads of fun to do and yes, I'm so very glad you did it. THis has been an odd and fast Christmas -- not what I hoped for, not what I expected months ago. But it is what it is and so off we go to enjoy. Love the dog and the tinsel wigs! Super fun!
What a fun photo, Maya!
This week!! Aiyiiii!
This will be one of many pics, so I'm sure it won't even really register. But it does make me laugh at us.
Famous last words, right, J?! You were so prescient... Thank you for the support and comfort <3
Thanks, Jeanie! "Odd and fast" what a nifty description of how it has felt... in addition to personal woes, there is of course the national and global hellscape too...
Thank you, my lovely!
I can only echo exactly what Lisa has said so well. And, of course, J. This Christmas has been almost a surprise in its confusing, imminent arrival, and extenuating circumstances make it even moreso.
Sometimes, finding Joy whenever and wherever we can is Enough. Other Christmases will come. Your photo is terrific and emblematic of that. Some sparkle, some chaos, but full of family and love.
Thank you, Nance. There's definitely a heightened element of "what even is time" this time around.
Max! He's perfect in every way and does not need a wig.
So you have a favorite...
It seems as if this is the card you needed.
I checked with a few people if they'd feel strange to receive it... I hope it strikes a good balance. Perhaps you'll tell me when you receive yours.
