prayer for a future tide

hollows show with stars
in sequence all these years
paralyzed only by the possibility
of time... if this world were mine
*
we'd follow the ripples on the path
to where we widen daily treads
into the light, though the trail
turns water as salty as tears
*
the sound of the sea is
so close to the humming om
of planets... of eternity folding--
dissolving all we can ever know...
*
reversing presents, lining calendar
days in black, and yet bringing
the urgent surf of every day
where we learn to love

That IS a lovely photo of you both. And you're right about the wheelchair. They've saved my tail more than once when we were in England six years ago.

I love "the urgent surf of every day" and "humming om." What a great photo, and yes, how lovely when museums provide wheelchairs.

"...if this world were mine...all we can ever know"

This part is truly the heart of the poem for me. It's wistful and beautiful and describes the vastness of memory, time, and the universe. How we are small within it, yet what we encompass is part of it, and as Whitman says, we are large and contain multitudes.

Thanks Jeanie! It's such a simple thing and not super expensive. I might write to a few places in India.

Now I feel the urgency to go back to Whitman, Nance... or to see eternity in a toddler's eyes/feet <3
