Did I get this wrong?

The news seems so huge, I feel I must be understanding it wrong. Birthright citizenship ended in the United States today (or at least that's what it sounds like). So kids born here many not automatically be citizens of the state? And relatedly, each state can decide what it wants for itself, so we're more like a federation than a republic? We have no national laws?

Also SB1 (Senate Bill 1) prohibiting DEI in education was enacted into law in Ohio. So the Women's Center, where I worked before this (Wright State U in Dayton, Ohio), just closed and all the people I used to work with are out a job.

I've been reading deeply into pre-Civil War history, and it's eerily similar. We're going backwards--quite rapidly--to that era when we were simply a loose federation of individual states, not a nation. President Abraham Lincoln is weeping somewhere to know what has been done to the Union he so valiantly worked to preserve, protect, and honour.

Ohio's government is overrun with corruption and power-hungry sadists. It's beyond sad, and I can't stand it.

I’ve been blissfully unaware of the news during this trip since we haven’t had the news on. It’s such a privilege to not pay attention to everything but has also been good for my mental health. I feel like all these ‘wins’ for this administration is just going to further strengthen the far right. They are getting exactly what they want and there is no check on power. It’s so sad.

It boggles the mind. What do we do? What do we say? Might as well lie on the grass and look up. We are all living life on two tracks, and it feels so strange to be going along on the smaller one when the bigger one is twisted beyond all recognition.

This was shocking, confusing and absolutely mind blowing to me. No words.

The Civil War is not an era I'd ever want to revisit... Sigh...

Thank you!

I was really hoping someone would correct me or even mansplain me for once!

I'm so glad you got a nice break, Lisa. I know you said you have to keep an eye on the news for work--a family trip seems the perfect time to take a break!

Allison--This exactly! The smaller track is what matters so deeply and where I want to be, but you know the bigger one looms over all our lives too.

Jeanie, I know you're feeling crushed. But my first thought was if a radio personality says that, then where are we?! <3

I have that same experience frequently, not being sure of the implications of new political developments. It's hard to keep up with what's happening, let along what it means.

You're very politically savvy, Steph. (And I like to think I keep up too.) Honestly, I think it's the people in charge who aren't playing by the rules.

I had looked forward to today--on the family calendar as a college orientation day for Nu. But kids and families were separated early in the...
