Spirit of Scoutie

We picked this spot for Scout's memorial because of the way he'd always come bounding up to greet me around that bend.

And while I didn't bury Scout's ashes there (what if we move?), we put up a wind chime and a solar lanternand when Max and I  are out on our first walk early every morning, we (ok, I) sound the wind chime.

Big A and I talk about how Max manifests some of Scoutie's quirks--the way he snuggles in the crook of my knees, "side-mopes," wrestles with Big A and so on. He's not as interested in food, gentle with Huck or a crybaby as Scout was though. And Max worships Nu--Scout wasn't ever sure if Nu was his younger sibling or older sibling.

Now that I've written that out, it's clear how much Max is unlike Scout... But Big A says he has the "spirit of Scoutie." So sometimes when I come upon Max just chilling by Scout's memorial, it really makes me stop in my tracks.

Pic: Max out by Scout's memorial. (Nu's more matter-of-fact theory is that he's treed Kylo, our black-garbed squirrel and Max's arch friendly rival.)

Take care.

Oh, dogs. Isn't it wonderful how they are all so unique? Their personalities really come through. Also, Rex (and Barkley before him) loves chasing squirrels.

Dogs are so wonderful. They have such a capacity for personalilty and love. I'm glad you have a memorial for Scout that's in a meaningful place. And that you chose to share your love with another dog, too.

I love Nicole's comment above. You would think all dogs would be similar (or, all cats, etc) But even our guinea pigs have different personalities! And... who knows what Max is sensing in that spot.

That's sweet.

Walter's sweet, laid-back vibe reminds me of Xander, which is why I switched the cats' middle names, to give him the name Walter Alexander. Xander, in turn, was named after my favorite childhood cat, Alexei, who had a similar spirit.

Oh, this is lovely -- the memorial itself and Max's spirit resemblance to Scout.

I love the different personalities of you sweet puppies and that Max embodies the spirit of Scout!

I like that. The Spirit of Scout. That's lovely. I'm quite sure our grands' cat Waffles has the spirit of Gypsy. (Actually, if cats really do have nine lives, Waffles is Mr. Gyps current one!). And that this is manifested in Max. I learned long ago that every one is an individual with its own quirks, loves and personality. That's sometimes frustrating and often, joyous. I loved Max and Huck so I have a feeling I would have loved Scout, too.

We laugh sometimes, joyful laughter, at how different the personalities of our dogs were. Genevieve was quiet and sweet, but not much of a cuddler, and not playful. Mulder was barkey and a bit of a Tasmanian devil, a big cuddle bug, and had a basket of toys that he loved.

I love your spot for Scout’s memorial, and that you ring the wind chime in his honor every morning. That’s so lovely.

Thank you, Gillian.

I hope Max never catches one, Nicole. I have nightmares from Rex's success. Ha.

I honestly can't imagine how I would have made it out of the first year if I didn't have to care for a Baby Max, Nance.

You gave me goosebumps, Jenny.

I love the continuity, Steph. (And also more Walter and Willow, please.)

Thank you, Suzanne!

Thank you, Lisa... A friend sent me a picture of a Baby Max because he had a blaze on his chest just like Scout did :)

Oh, I love that you can see Gypsy in Waffles, Jeanie! And also that you love Max and Huck! <3 Yes, You would have loved Scout and Scout would have loved you. That boy loved almost everybody.

We're at that point too, J where there is laughter about Scout's quirks. I can see Mulder being impish and shrewd about his toys/food in some of your videos and it has made me laugh too.
