It does make me feel a bit weird to think of someone harboring bad feelings for me and walking all the way up to my office knowing I would not be there and leaving me something they think I'll find menacing. But to what end... It's not like I'm going to look at this picture, realize the error of my ways, and suddenly become a white supremacist, patriarchal, heteronormative prig?
In other places in Michigan today: High school boys in Escanaba walked around telling girls, "your body, my choice." A friend in the Ann Arbor area who is black received a text telling them they'd been "selected to pick cotton at our nearest plantation." Clearly, the enabling effects of electing a rapist and a racist to the highest office are immediate.
Pic: I blanked out the more distinctive parts of my name because I'd rather not end up on any more professor watchlists. LV, my office neighbor tore the picture up like Captain Von Trapp ripping up the Nazi flag in The Sound of Music. That part was so satisfying--as was seeing Big A and At cursing up a storm on family chat.

Take care of yourself
And so it begins.
I'm sorry this happened to you.
I remember frightening things like this happening last time around. This is from my blog in late November 2016:
"You’re probably painfully aware that there’s been a spike in hate crimes nationally. Just in our little corner of the world, a Black Lives Matter sign at UCC church in Silver Spring that a friend of mine attends has been repeatedly vandalized. An Episcopal church in Silver Spring with a majority immigrant congregation had their sign advertising Spanish-language services defaced with the words “Trump Nation. Whites Only.”
And in more chilling examples, swastikas were drawn at a Bethesda middle school and at the French immersion elementary school a biracial friend of June’s attends, someone wrote “KILL KILL KILL BLACKS” on a restroom wall. Then last Friday a group of white nationalists were doing Nazi salutes at an Italian restaurant in Friendship Heights, a restaurant we frequent because it’s near the kids’ dentist. A boy who went to Noah’s preschool a year ahead of him and who’s now a junior at his high school heard about it on Twitter and got there in time for the protest."
So far I haven't heard about anything local, but it's only been a couple days. I'm sure the hate will begin to emerge again soon.
Maya, this is heartbreaking. I wonder if all the people who voted for "the economy" (such bullshit) feel any sort of compassion.
Hang in there. Your communal scream is coming up.
Hi Maya, I always post anonymous because I cannot figure out how to change it. But in an effort to have you experience LESS anonymity in your day-to-day, Hi! I am Steph of the virtual Subway sandwich. I sorry you are experiencing this. I see you working to make the world a kinder, more just place.
Sending a virtual FOOTLONG SUBWAY SANDWICH with all your favorite fixings!!
We have allowed this decline in civility and politeness and this is the outcome. I'm sorry there's so much cruelty in this world and I'm sorry you're dealing with it, friend.
This is all so alarming, Maya, it terrifies me to know that is happening on a campus, which should be open and safe.
That's some serious BS right there. I hate people. Stay safe.
Thank you!
Exactly what popped into my head, Nance.
How terrifying your incidents are, Steph. I would be crying if I encountered any of those...
Jenny, I'll not fault any choice made in desperation and poverty. But many, many of his voters don't care about people who are not like them. Like you say, they have no compassion... how does that happen? I'm GOING TO SCREAM SO LOUD!! :)
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Subway Steph! I think about your virtual Subway often, so I'm especially glad to have a name to link to it.
I get home too late to make dinner on Thursdays, so A always brings home... SUBWAYS for dinner (Jersey Mike's for Nu)! SO I did have a Subway yesterday! I saved your virtual Subway for this afternoon when I had a sticky spot or two. And it was perfect! <3
Thank you, Engie. I'm glad you're in this world and in this fight with me <3
Welcome back, Nicole! Sorry we don't have better news as you reenter North America...
I do feel safe on campus, and then I think of Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal and wonder where the misogyny will lead next...
Thanks for calling out the B.S., Jules. <3
StephLove: :D Apparently? And not "Stephany/nie" but "Steph." I'm sorry about problems with commenting.
I've also noticed comments just disappearing! I remember you saying something about my photo with Angela Davis a couple of years ago--but when I linked to it recently, I found your comment was gone!
these things are happening here as well-- solidarity.
In *Madison*?!? *Already*?!?!
