from a place of absence

Scout's  harness in a Ziploc
stays a  door always ajar
becomes a souvenir in
a sweet completeness
of loss... nostalgia

Scout's photo on the altar
has guarded so fiercely
hellish trails of regret
just my two eyes...
all these tears

Pic: Snow and sky in the backyard this weekend. The last couple of days have been so foggy... I've been white-knuckling it to and from work as visibility is very low, especially in low-lying pockets, and it's easy to imagine shapes where there aren't any and miss objects that only loom up at the last minute.

I like this poem about the mementos of those we've lost and how/why we keep them. Of course we don't need Things to remember them, but the Things bring the memories back to us.

Foggy here, too, and I had to drive in it yesterday. Not fun. Did you see the news segment of the "disappearing" jet? Startling.

Thanks, Gillian :).

Nance--Thank you for reading so tenderly. I kind of feel this is not a good piece at all, but belongs here mostly because I miss my Scout so much.

"Disappearing" jet?!!? (Back after a Google--is this about the F-35 that went missing last year?)

we have Beatrix's collar and leash in a ziploc on a hook by the back door.

That poem is too much for me right now.

I was driving from Wisconsin to Michigan on Thursday and I tried to admire the beauty of the fog instead of worrying about how dangerous it was. I made it through!

Sarah--I frequently think of Beatrix because of how close on the calendar her loss was to Scout's. How odd that you too have her harness in a Ziploc!

Engie--Hope all continues to go well for you. Thinking of you and sending good vibes.
