Best Advice Ever

Came, appropriately enough, from my (dissertation) advisor.

“My dear girl,” she said, “You shouldn’t analyze your life as though it were a literary text.”

Indeed, there are [nodding sagely].

But outside of England, i gather it's used rather ironically.

In this instance, i believe that it was rendered from experiencing near equal amounts of exasperation, affection, and amusement with/for/at me.
