Did I get this wrong?

The news seems so huge, I feel I must be understanding it wrong. Birthright citizenship ended in the United States today (or at least that's what it sounds like). So kids born here many not automatically be citizens of the state? And relatedly, each state can decide what it wants for itself, so we're more like a federation than a republic? We have no national laws?

Also SB1 (Senate Bill 1) prohibiting DEI in education was enacted into law in Ohio. So the Women's Center, where I worked before this (Wright State U in Dayton, Ohio) just closed and all the people I used to work with are out a job.

I've been reading deeply into pre-Civil War history, and it's eerily similar. We're going backwards--quite rapidly--to that era when we were simply a loose federation of individual states, not a nation. President Abraham Lincoln is weeping somewhere to know what has been done to the Union he so valiantly worked to preserve, protect, and honour.

Ohio's government is overrun with corruption and power-hungry sadists. It's beyond sad, and I can't stand it.

I don't even know what to say anymore. It's so devastating.

I’ve been blissfully unaware of the news during this trip since we haven’t had the news on. It’s such a privilege to not pay attention to everything but has also been good for my mental health. I feel like all these ‘wins’ for this administration is just going to further strengthen the far right. They are getting exactly what they want and there is no check on power. It’s so sad.
