A diamond

Although I didn't get to celebrate my MIL's 75th with her this weekend, I got to celebrate SD's diamond birthday with a houseful of her family and friends. SD is my lovely, and probably my first American, friend who has seen me through widowhood, single parenthood, and so much more, saving me over and over again.

We disagree about some things right now, but she'll listen to my rant and heartbreak, and she always ends every conversation by reminding me that she loves me.

The party was huge, and I took a breath before I dove in. I know SD's kids and some of her friends but there were so many people there... but then no one can ever stay a stranger in a Jewish home, in my experience. It was the best time, and I got dropped back to my hotel well after midnight.

Pic: SD's son, who works at the Kennedy Center, made an animated video about her life that I loved. The likeness was remarkable. For comparison, SD is the one in the gold sari next to me in this photo

How wonderful to be there to help a lifelong friend celebrate a milestone birthday!

I think the mark of a strong friendship is the ability to respectfully disagree about some things without it impacting your relationship. That is a tricky thing to navigate!

She sounds like an amazing friend. How wonderful to have someone so special in your life for so long.

How lovely! What is a diamond birthday? I know Golden Birthday (turn 25 on the 25th of the month) and when I look online, a diamond birthday is described as when your year matches your age, so SD would be turning 25…that doesn’t sound right. Is it like your diamond anniversary, so she turned 60? If that’s true, that’s very handy information, since I’m turning 60 in December!

What a wonderful friendship, perhaps a once in a lifetime one. I'm glad that the two of you aren't allowing a current issue to come between you after all you've been through together.

How nice you got to reconnect with an old friend.

Connecting with an old friend is just heaven, isn't it? And one who has known you through many trials, challenges and yes, joys. This makes me smile. You needed this.

100% agree on this Lisa. And I think it takes two.

Truly a blessing, Nicole. And I definitely "handle with care."

J! Mea Culpa! I thought a diamond birthday was one's 75th birthday (in some cultures that's what it's called because the traditional gift is a diamond). But googling did not provide any evidence of my beliefs :/

So excited for your 60th! In South India, people have a wedding (with their existing partner). I'm thinking reenactment... but there should be a better word?

Thanks!

Nance, Yes... Our friendship is old, we are older, and all of this requires delicate handling.

Steph, I think I connected you two once?

Jeanie, Yes! And your smile set mine off too. Her son took some photos of us hugging and kissing goodbye and I love them so much!
